Today marks six years since my first date with Jason. I think that people assume that since I was a nurse and he is a doctor that we must have met in the hospital. That always cracks me up even though it is a very natural assumption. I had always said that I didn't want to date/marry a doctor or anyone in the military. Well, I got both!! Shows you what I know... We met when Jason was stationed in the Air Force in Warner Robins. And it was actually Match.com that we have to thank for us getting the chance to meet. Jason claimed that he had done a free trial to see who he could meet in a week, and I had cancelled my membership and was waiting on the final few days until my membership ran out. He sent me a little message and I took the time to read his profile. It made me laugh out loud. There was an ease and humor to the way that he wrote that made me respond to his email. After several back and forth messages, I got to the point and sent him my number. He called that night, and we arranged a date for the weekend.
Like today, it was a Saturday. I started getting nervous around lunchtime. For those of you who know me well - no shocker there. He had to watch the OU game and was late to our first date, and honestly I thought I might throw up from nerves since he was late. He now claims that I can never be mad about football coming first on game day since I knew what I was
getting into from the first date! Jason came to my apartment to pick me up. I know, I know.... I didn't exactly follow the rules of safety, but it turned out quite nicely. That was his first trip to Macon. We had dinner at Luigi's in a window table - and we had dinner again at that table the night he proposed. Anyway, it was nonstop conversation. We talked about a little bit of everything, then proceeded to walk across the street to the Hummingbird to continue having drinks and people watching. I remember him telling me several times he thought I was the coolest chick he had ever met. I'm not sure he still feels that way after six years, but..... We talked about the interesting people that were there, and I (who had a few drinks, by this time) suggested that prime people watching could only take place in one location in Macon. So, we headed to Whiskey River. For anyone who has been, you know it a place filled with some characters. Anyway, we got a drink, took a seat and talked some more. We had our first dance to "Purple Rain" (which we made sure was on the wedding play list) and then he kissed me :) We got home around 2:30 or so and said goodbye. I was planning on heading to Washington the next day to see my mom.
I remember calling a few people on the way and having them ask about my date. I told each and every one of them that is was by far the best first date EVER. Really, you ask??? Dinner then barhopping??? It was about the way that we just clicked. We talked for hours and never ran out of things to say. I told my sister that it might sound completely crazy, but I thought that I had met the man I would marry. She laughed only briefly since she knew good and well that I had never said anything like that. And look at us now. 1.5 children later, a dog, a cat, and a lot of love. It has been the best six years of my life, and I hope to have many more. I got the sweetest text from him this morning since he is Baltimore for a board review class. It was to commemorate our date six years ago. Gotta love a man who remembers special dates...
